Project Statement and Evaluation

This blog is the documentation of my learning processes and outcomes for a Digital Fabrication Paper at Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand. The aim of this course was to learn and use methods of digital fabrication: Laser Cutting, Vinyl Cutting, Digital Embroidery and 3D Printing to challenge the current Fashion Industry and its wastefulness. The Fablab Wellington and its staff provided us with the equipment and the knowledge to rise to the challenge. And a challenge it was, at least for me. So for my outcome I decided I wanted to create a simple file, adaptable for all machines, shared to an open source for others, who also start out and have limited knowledge. One of the issues of our current relationship with our clothes is that there is no relationship. It is so much easier and unfortunately cheap to replace instead if mend or alter. The only high cost is for our environment as this is not sustainable. For those who wish to change, this can be challenging, and so it requires easy steps to avoid those willing to give it a try be overwhelmed and return to old habits. I chose garments which were broken, non-functional and boring and turned them into a fun little mini collection with only minimal effort (I do realise that this may make it sound like I didn’t put work in it, but believe me, I did.) to entice people to get creative and give their garments a second chance. To look through the blog go to the menu up top, where you can look through the weeks and different categories depending on what you are interested in.
